Paper mills sometimes produce foul odours that directly impact on the surrounding community. This odour nuisance is often linked to the release of H2S from the internal effluent systems of the mill. It also comes from odours emitted by bacteria growing in the recirculating water. Indeed, kraft pulp production requires the treatment of sludges and effluents before they can be discharged from the mill.
The pulp and paper industry produces a significant amount of warm effluent with high organic matter, which creates an ideal environment for bacterial growth. H2S is more than an odour problem
It is also a toxic gas against which we must protect the employees working in the plant. Since 1995, Hydrogen sulphide is classified as a hazardous chemical substance by the South African Department of Labour. The Hazardous Chemical Substances Regulation (under the Occupational Health and Safety Act) sets Occupational Exposure Limit values (OEL) for Hydrogen Sulphide of 10ppm (TWA-OEL) and 15ppm (Short Term OEL).

Odours in natural evaporation ponds can result in a very bad scent for the community, who are exposed to an odour nuisance related to H2S. Due to the lack of oxygen in these basins, hydrogen sulphide develops there with microbial activity. Curative treatments against H2S have little effect.
In 2007, Yara and INRA (French National Agricultural Research Institute) developed a preventive process called WiNOx®. WiNOx is available to South African vineyards and South African winemakers. WiNOx feeds the evaporation pond directly to prevent hydrogen sulphide formation. The dosage is done according to the flow rate and the load of the basin. This preventive treatment prevents the formation of malodorous compounds. It solves the problem of hydrogen sulphide and odour nuisance at the source.
WiNOx received an award at the SITEVI (International exhibition for the vine-wine, fruit-vegetable sectors, olive growing) event in 2007.
